The Goal: The primary goal of Tom McCarthy Photography is to bring the worlds of art and racing closer to gether while at the same time helping me earning a living to make ends meet. My work will also help contribute to a historical record of the subjects I choose to address.
WHY? - Racing has its own following, so does art, different people from different walks of life with different interests. If art from the motor sports world, can rise to the level of the highest rungs of the art world ladder; then both groups of people will see and learn something new. They will see something they didn’t know existed before this artful co-joining. And that’s the whole point: to expose both walks of life to something new and beautiful.
People who have never been to a motor sporting event will become exposed to the beauty and wonders of drag racing, Land Speed Record racing, and other forms of high speed competition. For the first time people will see cars, motorcycles and racing machines in competition in a whole new light. Then perhaps they will come to a race and experience the thrill and beauty first hand.
Likewise the same is intended to happen with racers suddenly going into art galleries. Racers and racing fans entering galleries they’ve never been to before will now become exposed to new art and new art experiences – perhaps they will buy something. Now artists and galleries will gain a new clientele they didn’t have before. This is a win-win situation for all concerned.
The racers get greater exposure, so do their sponsors, the artists get paid premium art prices for their art work, the galleries make new commissions and the racing venues gain a new fan base. This can’t help but benefit all involved.
If we all work together, present our best work, help to lift each other up, there is no telling what we can accomplish. None of us is as strong as all of us working together to achieve a common goal for greater good.
Visual Artist Varied Mediums
While the bulk of my artwork is photographically based, I also create metal sculpture and work with wood, plastics and or glass to create one-off items that inspire me. I also work with fire and will work with pyrotechnics to create a visual storm when the spirit moves me. Working in total darkness both excites and motivates me. I have various projects with differing mediums in progress now.
Have camera, will travel: anywhere. When the Bloodhound LSR car rolled out in Cornwall England, I was there. When it crested 568 MPH in South Africa, my camera work was on point. I’ve shot motorcycle ice racing at 17 degrees/f on a frozen pond and Land Speed Racing cars at 106 degrees/f in the Kalahari Desert. My Passport is valid and my record spotless.
Chasing The Magic
I often have a shot, or shots in mind, I seek to capture. But I love chasing the magic just to see what I can find. I am always looking for a different angle, a point of view, a reflection, something unusual that calls to me. If you want the usual, call anyone but me. If you have a concept an idea to flesh out that involves unusual lighting or night work – perhaps we should talk.
